Firstly, happy 2016! I hope you had a great festive season, and the New Year has started with a bang. You may notice this is a return to the old format of my emails. Turns out I didn’t like the new style and I think they were being marked as Spam for a lot of people. I know how much you enjoy these emails so I’d hate for you to miss out.

1) Unfortunately the first thing I have to do is apologise. I know that lots of people are still waiting for hard copies of our brochure to arrive. It really isn’t good enough and I have had words with our distribution company. They were ordered weeks before Christmas and should have arrived well before Christmas.

We are creating advanced fact sheets for every programme like the Young Leaders one attached to this email. About half are finished and all are / will be available using the link above.
3) Next week we will be launching a new Bucksmore website! Exciting times. You can view a few screenshots of the working site here: https://app.box.com/s/ulhv3exwtp7cwg0zsewwlf9wd7aigsot. When it launches please do let us know if you have any feedback. I’m always interested in feedback on anything we do!
There will be lots of photos and videos on the site, but of course there is nothing like seeing the colleges for yourself. Either I or one of the Bucksmore team will always be very happy to take you around any of our centres. Don’t hesitate to ask. We find the personal visits are much more useful than a mass fam trip. Plus it’s easier to share my rubbish Cambridge stories when it’s a small group! Give us as much notice as possible if you do want to visit any Bucksmore centre and we can easily arrange it.
4) Talking of new websites, the new Homelingua website (www.homelingua.com) has been live for a few weeks. “So what?” I hear you ask. Well, you need to know this because we have a completely unique function for home tuition programmes.
On this page (https://www.homelingua.com/teachers/) you or your students can choose your own teacher. We have uploaded all our teacher profiles to the site so we no longer have to use PDF teacher profiles. Instead we can simply send you a link OR you can use the filters (Location / Children / Pets etc) to enquire about one specific teacher.
We can’t promise they will be available for your dates but if they aren’t at least we know what you like and we can easily suggest a suitable alternative.
Pretty good right? Have a look and see what you think.
5) It’s that time of year when teenagers are worrying about academic studies and university placements. Don’t forget that Bucksmore Homelingua offers specialised academic 1:1 programmes. These can be anything from simple Academic English programmes during half-term, to GCSE immersion programmes, to intensive tuition in specific school subjects. This is of course we host the Cambridge Advanced Studies Program, and as I’m sure you’re fed up of hearing, it’s also my old college! Gives you a nice overview of Cambridge in winter.
Finally, one other little bit of information. Hopefully you know all about our new 2016 programme, Bucksmore Coding (www.bucksmore.com/coding) at Plumpton College by now. Well, the Raspberry Pi that all Bucksmore students will be given to take home has recently been used to power a computer in space: http://www.bucksmore.com/3070/astro-pi-takes-to-the-sky/! It shows the endless possibilities of these computers – I wish I’d had the chance to learn all about this when I was growing up. I struggle with Microsoft Excel sometimes!

I hope all’s well. Actually, I take that back. It’s peak booking season and I hope you’re so busy dealing with enquiries that you are far too busy to relax!
Yes, it’s the usual monthly update from me. At this time of year I hope you have all the information you need about Bucksmore and it’s a bit late for me to be telling you anything new…
BUT of course I like to remind you of everything to help convert those important spring sales. As promised in my last email I want to focus a little bit on academics as well as a few other bits and pieces. This one is a really long email. Sorry. Try to read as much as you can / want to!

1) Plumpton College – Honestly, and you may have heard me say this before, Plumpton is my favourite summer location ever. However, what I have been finding in the last couple of years is that new students are overlooking Plumpton for what they see as more prestigious boarding school (King Edward’s) or university (Oxbridge / London) locations.
So, why do I love Plumpton? Well:
· I completely believe that it is the perfect location for 11 to 14/15 year olds. I see Plumpton as an ‘entry level’ summer location – most of the students are on their first trip.
· Having said that, Plumpton gets the best feedback from any centre (maybe joint top with Three Capitals) and has the highest number of returners. Some students won’t even change location when I think they should try something like Young Leaders or Bucksmore Cambridge!
· The location is beautiful. Literally at the bottom of the South Down hills. I love driving there.
· Newest accommodation of any Bucksmore centre – built in 2010. I very happily stay there overnight in the summer!
· It has a farm and is full of animals. The ‘Animal Centre’ even includes wallabies and an aviary (for birds). See for yourself here: http://www.plumpton.ac.uk/department/animal-care-veterinary-nursing/6. Students love it.
· It has the best horse-riding facilities in the south of England. Better than any other summer centre! They can accommodate complete beginners with this amazing mechanical horse (I’ll show you if you ever visit) or advanced riders wanting jumps etc.
· The Plumpton staff look after us better than anyone and they love Bucksmore. Our students make friends with all the kitchen staff and even the legendary Dave (Chief Warden).
· Our Centre Management team have been there for years and they have seen it all. Mr Tom (CM) has been with us for 8 summers; Miss Gemma (DoS) for 4 years; and Miss Nicola (AM) for 3 years. If staff return every year, then it says a lot about the quality of the centre.
· For this age group, and for what the programme includes (22.5 hours of English etc), I don’t know of a better summer option AND it is better value than any of our competitors at £950 per week. Please do tell me if you think I’m wrong, but I can’t see why you wouldn’t send all your younger students to Plumpton (or King Edward’s of course)!
· We have had students on Facebook change their name to ‘Plumpton’ because they love it so much. I bet no other school has had that! Right!?
I will admit that Plumpton can sometimes be a harder sell sometimes than the Oxbridge Colleges (for example) but once a student goes there you are guaranteed good feedback and most likely a returning customer. It is our job to sell locations after all, and we all want the best for our students.
Try to visit it at least once if you haven’t already. As ever please let us know if you are in the UK at any time, particularly over the summer, and you can see for yourself why I’m raving about it. Don’t just go to the obvious locations like Cambridge (although obviously this is a personal favourite of mine too)!
Important note on Plumpton: we have closed the first week of Plumpton as advertised in our original 2016 prices and dates. Plumpton now starts on Tuesday 28th June. Not 21st June as original advertised. With the leap year in 2016, it is proving too early for most markets so I hope it doesn’t cause any inconvenience.

2) Academic Corner – As promised last month, academics are now a regular feature. This is after all what lies at the heart of our summer programmes. On Bucksmore general English programmes you may have noticed that the mornings are divided into 3 lessons: 2 syllabus lessons and 1 ‘Conversation Class’.
I’m sure you know this but our general English syllabus is completely unique to Bucksmore and it’s written by our academic team. No textbooks and unlike other summer schools, there’s no way they could have seen this material at their school.
The Conversation Class however is slightly different. It’s a 30 minute lesson at the end of the morning to review and use the grammar / vocabulary / skills covered in the syllabus. The stated aim is to: “improve speaking and listening using colloquialisms, experiencing a variety of native accents and have spontaneous conversations.”
This is what Bucksmore is all about – practical application of language in natural environments and this is what we are always trying to do on all our programmes.
DON’T FORGET – the Conversation Classes are when the English teenagers join at King Edward’s School (www.bucksmore.com/kingedwards) and become language assistants. They help to create the natural situations in which our students can practise their new skills.
3) The Terror Situation – We are all appalled by what has happened recently in Paris and Brussels. I’m sure it’s had an impact on your business and we’ve seen it as well, as parents understandably become nervous about sending children away. We can’t ignoring it so I’ll confront it now.
Firstly, Bucksmore has always had a terror threat risk assessment and procedures that are part of staff inductions. We are revising these now in accordance with recent events. If you are interested in knowing details, please contact Ben who is taking the lead on the project.
If I was talking to a parent with these concerns, I would make the following points:
· The UK is safer than mainland Europe. Yes, it is a target but border controls are very tight here and there is no freedom of movement as there is in mainland Europe.
· We will still run London excursions. We use private coaches and although students visit famous landmarks, they will not be near large public transport hubs (train and tube stations) which would be the primary targets for any attack.
· The UK government regularly updates its terror threat level. It is currently ‘Severe’ but this is not the worst level. The terror threat level has NOT changed since August 2014. Statistically and officially therefore, the threat is the same this year as it was in summer 2014 and 2015.
I know this is having an impact on the whole industry, so please do get in touch if you have any questions about this.
4) Homelingua Ireland – This is going really well. We have a great range of teachers lined up, all of whom you can view and find here: https://www.homelingua.com/locations/republic-of-ireland/. All priced in EUROS don’t forget.
In case you were wondering, ‘Tighe’ is an Irish name (the family is from Limerick) so you shouldn’t need to ask about what I think of Ireland! Amazing country and I can’t recommend it highly enough for your students.
5) Homelingua summer – We are only in April but we are already filling up quickly for the summer. In particular, teachers in London and the south, and with children at home are being booked very quickly. We’ll do what we can to help of course, but here is what I suggest:
· See if you can persuade them to be open about the location. Yes, we know everyone wants London / the south. However, we have so many great teachers elsewhere in the UK and Homelingua is all about the family experience so whenever possible it would be great to push other locations. If you want to know why Liverpool or Scotland or Malvern (my home town) are amazing just ask and we can help you with information!
· If they insist on a location and very definite criteria please allow us a bit of extra time at this stage of the year to find exactly what you need.
