We are always responsive to students’ needs and, as a result of your requests and suggestions, we have introduced a more flexible timetable and a wider variety of course types to allow students greater freedom to tailor their studies to their individual requirements. Lessons are 45 minutes long, and a Standard course consists of 20 lessons/15 hours per week. Our Standard course will not change in the mornings (9am-12.15pm) while the afternoon Standard course will consist of 3 lessons of General English (GE) plus a supplementary Booster class, which learners can choose to suit their needs and focus on specific areas of language development such as GE + Pronunciation Booster. This offers more choice for the students and greater opportunities to practise areas of their English that are a challenge for them. (This course also provides the necessary hours for Visa students.) We are also offering a variety of Intensive and Combination courses that allow learners to customise their study further and really get the most out of their time at the school. These courses combine General English and are supplemented with a selection of Booster classes (Conversation, Pronunciation, Writing Skills, Exam Skills and Business Proficiency), ESP, private one to one lessons and so on. Students can study for a maximum of 40 lessons/30 hours per week. As mentioned above, we have created some new study options and courses in the form of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in six key areas: Finance, Law, Marketing, Media, Medical and Tourism & Hospitality, the Young Learners’ programme and Cambridge Exam Preparation courses together with our current core courses such as IELTS Preparation, Business English and one to one private lessons. These course options are designed to meet all the students’ needs while studying at Rose of York. FAQ at our recent ICS FAM trip At our new upper primary campus in Marylebone we recently hosted a group of UK-based agents. It was an enjoyable and informative day, with attendees gaining an understanding of our approach to learning in both our summer and mainstream programmes. The agents had a number of burning questions. Here they are, along with our answers. 1. What sports does the school offer? All ICS students have a formal sports class once per week. In addition, students have opportunities to do sports and games every day during break times. 2. Does the school provide accommodation? We work with a homestay provider for students that want to stay with families, and we now recommend local estate agents and airbnb to families who wish to be closer to the school. 3. Does the school hire only native speakers of English? We recruit the best teachers available, whatever their nationality. We are also very lucky to hire a lot of ICS year-round teachers during the summer, ensuring unrivaled standards of teaching, learning and student welfare. 4. What nationalities are your students in the summer? We teach learners from around the world, creating an inclusive, internationally-minded school community. In 2015, students from over 54 countries attended ICS Summer School. The top five student countries were: Italy (18.5%) Russia (13.7%) Turkey (12.9%) Saudi Arabia (6.1%) China (4.5%) 5. What is the maximum number of students per class? We have a maximum of 18 students per class. However, our average class size is 14 students. 6. How are learners placed into classes and what levels do you have? We have students aged from 3 to 17, and at all levels of ability. On their first Monday in school, students take a friendly test which assesses their vocabulary and comprehension skills. A review is now planned for later this year and government officials will have a lot of industry analysis to consider as they revisit questions of visa fees, tax rates, and other key aspects of Australia's working holiday programme. Australia postpones new "backpacker tax" for working holiday makers

Australia had planned to implement a new income tax for working holiday makers on 1 July 2016. The tax has now been postponed until 1 January 2017 pending a government review of the working holiday programme.

Industry analysis, meanwhile, highlights that working holiday numbers are down in Australia over the last two years, due in part to significant increases in visa fees. A new report argues for much more competitive visa fees and tax rates in order to improve the attractiveness of Australia for working holiday makers.

EU vote harmonises and eases visa rules for non-EU students

New visa rules passed this month by the European Parliament will open up expanded post-study work and residency options for non-EU students in Europe.

The new Visa Directive also seeks to harmonise visa regulations across EU member states, and to improve mobility within Europe for non-EU students and researchers. Non-EU nationals will now be permitted to work at least 15 hours per week during the studies and to remain in Europe for at least nine months after their studies.

Brazil: research highlights shift to affordable destinations and career-oriented studies

Earlier this month, BELTA presented new research on 2015 trends in the Brazilian market for study abroad. The research draws on two surveys conducted during 2015: the first a survey of 135 education agents, and the second a student survey of nearly 2,000 respondents.

The research reveals that Brazilians are shifting their decision-making about overseas destinations amid the current economic and political crisis affecting their country. Affordability has never been more important to Brazilian students wanting to study abroad, and they are making decisions accordingly.

UAE leads the world in English-medium international school enrolments

English-medium international schools have become an increasingly important recruitment channel for universities as nearly all students enrolled in such schools intend to pursue undergraduate studies abroad.

New research from the International School Consultancy highlights the United Arab Emirates as the global leader in English-medium school enrolment: 545,074 students are now enrolled at 548 international schools in the Emirates, a significant lead over the Saudi Arabia's second-largest enrolment of 260,989. More broadly, ISC calculates that more than 4.3 million students are now being educated at over 8,200 international schools worldwide; by 2026, enrolment is projected to reach 8.7 million.

Other news you need to know about Homelingua programmes from 1^st October:

1) Transfers – All junior fees must book a transfer to / from their teacher’s house unless accompanied by parents. For 2016/17 we will charge a fixed price of £100 per journey to / from a nominated airport for each teacher. Each teacher’s nominated airport will be included in their PDF and website profile. This will add clarity to all bookings and make it much easier for you and for parents.

We can still arrange transfers from any airport but these will be quoted upon request.

2) Programmes – obviously Homelingua never stops so our 1:1 and 2:1 adult and junior programmes run all year including Christmas week. Are there any school holidays we could target outside the summer for junior students as well?

Family programmes are becoming increasingly popular. We have lots of different combinations for parents & children and we have renamed some of these options just to make things clearer:

Family Study – both parent and child study (separately) with the teacher.
Family Visit – child has lessons, parent is accommodation, meals and excursions only.
Family Summer – parent has lessons, (young) child goes to a local nursery summer camp.
July / August only.
Family Farmstay – the whole family joins activity-based lessons on a working farm.
