Welcome to The PIE Weekly,

The King Abdullah Scholarship Program has been a mixed blessing for educators, especially in North America. While the volume of students has provided dependable income (maybe too dependable) for English language centres, anecdotal reports say outcome expectations are unrealistic and compliance frustrating. 

We spoke with educators in Canada this week about how they have responded to the latest raft of regulations handed down from the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission. Some have complied but still see numbers falling as reports persist that funding for overseas scholarships is diminishing. 

Canada of course isn’t the only country where providers will be struggling to keep up after KASP reductions. We reported last month that English USA’s member survey showed some school intakes were 30-50% Saudi Arabian students last year.  

To make matters worse, communication between schools and the programme’s administrators leaves much to be desired. Uncertainty remains for the future of the programme but whatever the outcome, it will be felt by educators across the continent.
