Welcome to The PIE Weekly,
In spite of the growing list of complaints about the European Union, the Eurovision song contest is one of the best gifts of pop music magic the continent has given to the world. This year, Ukraine won with its controversial entry evoking the deportation of Tatar muslims from Crimea in 1944.

Love it or hate it, the contest manages to bring out Europe’s spirit of unification, manifest in watch parties held by 200 million viewers worldwide.

The much debated concept of Europe is central to two of our stories this week: one a survey of more than 1,000 students that shows almost half wouldn’t study in the UK if it votes to leave the EU in June. The other fairly big story exhibits the European Parliament’s ability to standardise visa requirements for international students across almost all member states.

By pure coincidence, this week’s PIE Chat corresponds with this year’s Eurovision victor: Inna Sovsun, the first deputy minister for education in Ukraine. She tells how she became one of the youngest leaders in parliament and how the country’s higher education providers are trying to be outward looking despite facing so many internal struggles.

Alexander Troy named new Head of School at American Hebrew Academy

Greensboro, NC - As the American Hebrew Academy celebrates its 15th anniversary with the commencement of the 2016-2017 academic year, the Board of Trustees has appointed Alexander Troy as the new Head of School beginning July 1, 2016. The announcement comes following a yearlong search and extensive review of candidates from the United States and Israel. Academy CEO & General Counsel Glenn Drew commented following the announcement, "As the only international Jewish college prep boarding school in the world, we have diligently searched for candidates with impeccable credentials and a depth of experience befitting our esteemed institution now recognized around the globe for academic excellence, Jewish leadership, and educational innovation. Mr. Troy's credentials reflect his strong academic study and business acumen." Troy received his undergraduate degree summa cum laude in economics from Yale University, where he also played basketball; his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, and a Master's Degree with a thesis on Moses from St. John's College. A lifelong learner, Troy has completed numerous alumni courses at Yale University; studied American Jewish history at the Jewish Theological Seminary, and has undertaken weekly Torah study since 2003. Mr. Troy has held posts in academia since 2002, acting as a teacher in several subject areas in Maryland and New York, a Torah study teacher, Board Chair, and Board member of Amistad Academy for twelve years, and a lecturer at NYU's Stern School of Business. Additionally, he has created a course curriculum, Introduction to Investing, for high school juniors and seniors. Mr. Troy has also written and lectured extensively on the topics of Moses and Job, and regularly delivers a weekly D'var Torah. Leeor Sabbah, Chair of the Academy's Board of Trustees noted: "Alex Troy brings both enthusiasm and passion for Jewish Education. He has a measured, calm approach, needed in the volatile day-to-day environment working with teens, and which will ensure the growth and smooth operation of the Academy for many years to come." In the financial sector, Mr. Troy has served as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer at Skadden Arps; a partner and managing director of several hedge funds; investment portfolio manager and Chief Investment Officer for several family offices.
