“ National Cabinet agreed to work closely and carefully to return international students on a small, phased scale through a series of controlled pilots. This planning process will take time and require well thought through plans from state and territory governments. Preconditions will include the reopening of internal state and territory borders, as well as the return to on-campus learning for the benefit of domestic students and the international students who are already in Australia”

- Restrictions on international travel remain for now.
- National Cabinet has agreed to a3-step plan to create a COVIDSafe society.
- Under Step 3, interstate travel and the possibility of travel to New Zealand will be considered.

- You can only travel to Australia if you are an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, an immediate family member of an Australian citizen or permanent resident or are a New Zealand citizen usually resident in Australia.
- Travellers who have a compassionate or compelling reason to travel to Australia will need to have an exemption from the Australian Border Force Commissioner.
- All travellers arriving in Australia must undertake a mandatory 14-day quarantine at designated facilities (for example, a hotel), in their port of arrival.
- Travel restrictions are subject to change. Some exemptions are in place. Please check back regularly.

“Students who have been here longer than 12 months who find themselves in financial hardship will be able to access their Australian superannuation”.
Students unable to return to Australia to continue their studies may have their study deferred. This will not affect their visa status.

Few encouraging news for students.
Higher Education Reforms. On 19 June, the Australian Government announced the Job-ready Graduates Package. The package sets out new funding models and reform plans for higher education. The focus is on delivering more job-ready graduates in the disciplines and regions where they are needed most and on helping drive the nation’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The package also includes an additional $400 million over four years for regional, rural and remote education initiatives; a $900 million STEM-focused industry fund – the National Priorities and Industry Linkage Fund; and the creation of a National Microcredential Marketplace. Regional University Centres. Australian Government announced 9 new Regional University Centres under the $53.2 million Regional University Centres program to support students to remain in regional Australia while they study for a tertiary qualification. This latest additions bring the total number of Regional University Centres to 25.
Accommodation. There is a six-month ban on evictions for both residential and commercial tenants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
