“ National Cabinet agreed to work closely and carefully to return international students on a small, phased scale through a series of controlled pilots. This planning process will take time and require well thought through plans from state and territory governments. Preconditions will include the reopening of internal state and territory borders, as well as the return to on-campus learning for the benefit of domestic students and the international students who are already in Australia”

Few encouraging news for students.

Higher Education Reforms. On 19 June, the Australian Government announced the Job-ready Graduates Package. The package sets out new funding models and reform plans for higher education. The focus is on delivering more job-ready graduates in the disciplines and regions where they are needed most and on helping drive the nation’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The package also includes an additional $400 million over four years for regional, rural and remote education initiatives; a $900 million STEM-focused industry fund – the National Priorities and Industry Linkage Fund; and the creation of a National Microcredential Marketplace. Regional University Centres. Australian Government announced 9 new Regional University Centres under the $53.2 million Regional University Centres program to support students to remain in regional Australia while they study for a tertiary qualification. This latest additions bring the total number of Regional University Centres to 25.
